In the old forum (not sure if it made it over here) there was a long discussion on this and a class named SortableCollectionBase.vb was developed by some of the users. There were some long threads on how to use it. It was pretty well done and had a consistent sort ordering.
Not sure if it is still available anywhere - check the Contrib area.
