SortedBindingList and SmartDate

I have a sortedbindinglist that is sorting the ActiveDate as text instead of a smartdate (06/01/2008 is coming before 07/01/2007 in ascending order).  Is there something I can do to tell the ApplySort that the field is a date and not text?
