Why are some CRUD operation not handled by portal?

The CSLA sample application, ProjectTracker, contains some object (ResourceAssignment, Assignment) with CRUD methods that do not appear to be called via the data portal. Why?

What line are you refering to?

Only the root object need use the dataportal; once it has been called once, the root's children can assume they are already running on the server and can simply do their updates.
