How to insert new property in child object?

Thank you for reading this question.

Here is my issue.

I have parent object has couple of child objects with list objects.

When I try to insert property in child object without updating parent object, Is it good Idea that Run DataPortal_Insert? instead of running Child_Insert?

That child object also has list object too.

Any answer will be very helpful to me.
